2 NFPA 20 compliant Super duplex firewater pumps delivered
As a part of the establishment of the 400 MW Horns Rev C offshore windfarm, Pleuger Water Solutions has been appointed to deliver all pumps for the firefighter system of the Horns Rev C Offshore high voltage substation.
Within just 5 months from PO to delivery Pleuger Water Solutions managed to deliver 2 NFPA 20 compliant Super duplex firewater pumps (QT12EHM-2a + VNI12-90-2, 360 m3/h - 9,2 bar ) with an anti bio fouling system including the electronics and a copper and aluminium anodes system. All additional required equipment such as NRV, adapter, motor centralizer & anti bio fouling constructions were part of the project. The units won’t be running in continues operation and anti bio fouling are an important factor in keeping the longevity of the pumps. For this reason 2 additional spares have been delivered.
The firewater lift pumps will work in close collaboration with 2 firewater booster pumps (also supplied by Pleuger Water Solutions) to provide sufficient pressure on the firewater system to the helicopter deck and to the firewater sprinklers on the diesel oil tank on the roof deck.
On board overhaul of 7 submersible motors
Pleuger Water Solutions received the order to overhaul 7 sumbersible motors (320kW 6kV) that drive the power pack of the Saipem 7000.
First an inspection on the vessel was performed and an assessment of all necessary repairs was made. Since the next offshore job of the S7000 was already planned the time table for the overhaul was pushed to the limit. After discussing the options the dismantling and assembly was planned on the vessel itself. Bringing the know-how and our expertise to our client and eliminating transportation of the motors as a whole.
Seal production and rotors (3,5m long and 1000 kg!) balanced within a day by our flexible partners, our specialized stock of long lead time items and the expertise to vulcanizing new motor leads outside of our workshop allowed us to complete the job in just 26 12-hour shifts.
The overhaul of all 7 submersible motors was completed including all required documentation and reports.
Optimization of bearings
Continuously working with partners in industry and universities on the development of innovative technologies has led to many optimizations with regard to product design. Polymer research in specific has lead to breakthrough material selection of bearings.
For example the optimization of the bearing bushes for our submersible pumps. In the past years, our partners have made significant progress in the continuous improvement of compound polymers for bearing applications.
We have now successfully tested a special polymer compound explicitly designed for demanding bearing applications. This new bearing combines some excellent properties:.
- High wear resistance for longer bearing life
- Superior dry running capabilities
- Extremely low start-up resistance
- No swelling for continuous geometrical stability
- High temperature resistance for broad application range
- Outstanding resistance to a wide range of chemicals
- High impact resistance for easy assembly and handling
- Lean manufacturing process for best cost solution
3 years of development and testing were performed for validating this thruster bearing technology:
- Continuous high temperature testing > 90°C for several weeks with maximum load.
- Maximum temperature tests 120°C
- Continuous shock-loading treatment
- Low speed mixed friction testing
In its final design, the bearings are combining unique capabilities in terms of performance and resilience. The permissible rated performance is defined in the individual specification of the bearing.
Field Proven Technology
The first prototypes were delivered in 2012 and have been running for more than 2 years in some very demanding applications which have severe water hammer in their systems (Offshore, Mining). With more than 1000 HDB bearings of different sizes operating in the field so far, there have been no bearing related failures reported.
Features and Capabilities
For the MI16, rated load with the new thrust bearing is 150kN a doubling of the previous load 75kN. The HDB thrust bearing is a pivoting pad thrust bearing based on a stainless steel collar running against pads made of a application specifically designed material.
HDB bearing technology combines multiple unique capabilities and is superior to the old HDK (hard carbon) and HDF (rubber) series in every regard:
- Higher thrust capability (x 2 compared to HDK)
- Superior robustness against dynamic operating conditions, e.g. water hammer (x 2 compared to HDK)
- Minimized start-up torque (half compared to HDK)
- Increased resistance against wear
- Improved dry running capabilities
- Higher temp. resistance for maximum operating range (max. 100°C motor filling temp.)
